Tuning of piano

Tuning a piano means that every note wil be set in such a way to be in relation with each other.  A4 (which is A above middle C) is the starting point tuning the first octave.  It is important to tune the perfect 4ths to sound alike.  The same principal apply to the perfect 5ths.  After the first octave is tuned to perfection, octaves is used to tune the rest of the piano.  Something that needs to be noted is that i don’t use an electronic tuning device to tune note by note.  In my learning experience i found a electronic tuning device to be inaccurate.  See Q&A for more info.

Repair of piano

There is thousands of parts to be found in a piano.  There is a lot of moving parts and that cause wear and tear to take place.  Over time it is considered necessary to repair certain parts and some parts need to be replaced for the piano to function 100%.  See Q&A for more info.

Regulating of piano

Regulating of a piano can be referred to calibrating.  When a piano is regulated, parts are calibrated to work in relation with each other so the touch will be like factory conditions.  Some of the regulating process includes:

  • Distance hammer at resting point and the strings;
  • When the jack (which lifts the hammer) fall back to allow for hammer to return to rest and
  • Adjusting of dampers.

All these and more settings adjust touch to give the pianist the best of their piano’s.  See Q&A for more info.

Servicing of piano

You won’t think that a closed piano can gather so much dust on the inside.  When the piano is serviced, a thorough cleaning is done.  It is common for dust to occur on the strings.  When the piano is serviced a special technique is used to remove the rust from the strings.

At every service the piano is treated for insects.  As the piano have lots of felt, it attracts insects over time.  See Q&A for more info.
